Ulwe Road: Boon to future transit network

City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) of Maharashtra has planned a road in the Ulwe node of Navi Mumbai. As a state-of-the-art technology project, the road will profoundly enhance the transit network of the city in the upcoming years. The proposed road is a six-lane divided road that commences from JNPT (Belpada) traversing the foothill of Jasai, making an interchange at Shivaji Nagar with proposed MTHL, running on the coast of Ulwe by providing access to the proposed off-shore banking centre of SEZ (O.B.C.) and terminating near Panvel creek at Aamra Marg.

This project will be implemented in two phases that will link the Mumbai Trans-Harbour Link (MTHL) and the proposed Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). Phase-I will cover the junction of Aamra Marg to the interchange with MTHL at Shivaji Nagar including the airport link road and Phase- II will stretch from Shivaji Nagar to JNPT (Belpada). The total length of the road is 10.106 kms, out of which 5.8 kms will be developed in Phase-I with airport connectivity of 1.2 kms.

Ulwe road has been planned with 3 flyovers at nodal road junctions, 2 RCC bridges on stilt having lengths of 1.2 kms and 0.6 km respectively. Other features of the project include Intelligent Traffic Control System along with provision of RCC service duct all along the length of the road and across the road at junctions/pre-determined locations. The service road proposed along the roadside will take care of nodal traffic and ensure unobstructed traffic movements from MTHL to the airport. The airport connectivity will take off from the Road near Targhar railway station that will run above the Nerul-Uran railway line and Aamra Marg. The Ulwe road project is an environment-friendly project with approvals from MCZMA / MOEF and received CRZ clearance in the year 2017. MCZMA has recommended the proposal to MOEF for their clearance, which is expected soon. The project is expected to be completed by October 2021.
