Conservation of Belapur fort
'Belapur Fort' known as the only historical monument existing today in Navi Mumbai has its history that dates back to the 16th Century. The Fort built by the Siddis of Janjira was conquered by the Portuguese in 1582. Once the fort that had 5 Burj and a strong fortification, today exists in ruined form. CIDCO has taken up the responsibility of restoration and beautification of the Fort, which witnessed the bravery of the Marathas, to regain its past glory and restore its ruins. The Fort will be restored and developed into a tourist spot.
Restoration and Beautification
At present the Fort which is under CIDCO's jurisdiction has a total area of 5 acres. The Fort will be developed as a tourist spot as well as an educational and cultural centre. In order to preserve the biodiversity, the Fort and its surroundings will be developed as a natural trail. The existing ruins will be restored to bring back the history of four decades. For new constructions the contemporary construction material and style would be adopted to make recreate the historical era. The arrival plaza at the access point will have various facilities like ticket window, resting place, shopping etc. A stairway leading from the Arrival Plaza and the ramp will also be made available. The Battery Operated Vehicle will be made available into the Fort. Also the facilities like parking lot, cafeteria, resting place, pavilion, watch towers will be developed. An innovative concept of Amphitheatre and open theatre on the backdrop of the Burj will be implemented. These facilities will prove beneficial for organising the cultural and educational programmes, educational projects and trips, camps. The history of the Fort will be presented through the programme based on the light-sound theme. The centre for exhibiting the rich maritime and naval history of the west coast of Mumbai will be established here. A garden and fountain are proposed to be developed in the surrounding area of the Fort. The cost estimate of the project is Rs. 17 Crores.
