Commercial Infrastructure

Service Sector
With the advent of Navi Mumbai, the chemical industry sector in the area got transformed. Air polluting industries faded out gradually. Navi Mumbai’s economic base is unique with more dependence on private sector activities like wholesale trading and processing activities in agricultural produce markets, Iron and Steel stockyards and wholesale markets, port-based commercial and industrial activities, private and public sector offices, training and research and development centres in selected District Business Centres (DBCs) and Central Business District (CBD).

Wholesale Markets
The real cause of congestion in South Mumbai was the wholesale trade in various commodities. CIDCO planned shifting of wholesale markets of Mumbai the new city to create commercial infrastructure. These markets are: Wholesale Iron and Steel Markets as well as Agricultural Produce Market.

Asia’s largest Agriculture Produce Market Complex (APMC) developed at Vashi houses wholesale markets of onion and potato, fruits and vegetables, etc. in the market of Navi Mumbai. Wholesale markets for processed agricultural products, grains, pulses, sugar, jaggery, condiments, spices, dry fruits, coconut and edible oils are also situated in the complex. It also houses shop-cum-godowns and traders’ offices.

Iron & Steel market complex, Kalamboli
There is also a huge Iron and Steel wholesale market complex in Kalamboli. The complex is spread over 300 hectare and provides employment to over 40,000 people in ancillary business. Almost 2000 wholesale traders and agents have their offices and gowdowns here. The major players among them are Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Tata Iron and Steel Company (TISCO) and Central Warehousing Corporation of India (CWCI).

CIDCO has provided ample infrastructure for vehicle parking for the complex. Besides this plots have been leased out for different warehousing purposes. Over 12 hectare for wholesale Cement market, 6 hectare for Cotton Corporation of India, 9 hectare for CWCI and 18 hectares for Food Corporation of India (FCI)

IT Job Hubs
Realizing the growing importance of information and technology, Government of Maharashtra identified selected areas suitable for the growth and development of this industry in the state. The International Infotech Park, Vashi was inaugurated on 14th June 1998. The IIP is located at the most ideal location. More than 6 lakh sq. ft. built-up premises in the commercial complex of Vashi Railway Station have been earmarked for the Information Technology Park (ITP). The companies VSNL, Hughes Ispat, STPI, the National Stock Exchange Inter-connect, etc. have already started functioning. The Infotech Park created about 50,000 jobs directly or indirectly.

CIDCO has developed yet another infotech hub, the International Technology Centre in Belapur. Planned as the Central Business District the node is accessible from all parts of the country by rail and road, while air transport and water are underway. The state-of-the-art building offers uninterrupted power supply and residential facilities around. Plenty of parking space, recreation and entertainment facilities in the vicinity are additional advantages
